When couples start counselling, many say their goal is simple: “We just want to be happy again.” But happiness can be tricky to define. We want to be able to have a clear goal so we know where we're headed. What does “happy” mean to you and your partner? Does it mean going back to the excitement of when you first started dating? The closeness you felt before the kids came along? Or is it about creating a new version of happiness that fits your lives now?




If you find it hard to articulate what happiness looks like, you’re not alone. Many couples struggle to put this concept into words. One way to start is by brainstorming or imagining what a happy relationship might look like for you.


  • What happens when things are going along smoothly and you feel connected? Think about the moments when your relationship feels easy.   • What does happiness feel like? Picture the energy in your home when things are going well. Is it calm, supportive, or full of laughter? Happiness often isn’t about grand gestures but about the everyday moments where you feel connected and valued.

  • What’s your ideal vision for the relationship? If you could wave a magic wand, what would change? Is it about feeling heard and understood? Spending more quality time together? Or resolving conflicts without them turning into arguments?
